Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong Province will require all overseas arrivals to be subject to a 21-day quarantine at designated isolation centers ahead of The China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) to be held in the city as the country has seen COVID-19 surge centered in East China's Fujian Province.

The new quarantine rules were outlined in a statement issued on Saturday and will take effect on Saturday and last until October 20.

All international arrivals will have to go through 21-day quarantine at isolation centers arranged by Guangzhou, instead of staying in the centers for 14 days and shifting to home quarantine for seven days.

The upgraded COVID-19 prevention and control measures were implemented ahead of the 130th China Import and Export Fair, one of the world's largest trade fairs, that will kick off on October 14 in Guangzhou.

The statement also required those who have been to COVID-19 medium-high risk areas in China to go through 14-day quarantine at isolation centers.

Epidemic prevention and control work at all public venues as market and theaters will also be strengthened, according to the statement.
